question of the day

The question of the day is:

HOW MANY?

If you are participating in the polaroid swap, how many fussy cuts do you want to send to each person and therefore receive that many?
Please comment, telling the group how many you plan to send to each person so that each person knows how many to send you in return.
If anyone knows of an easier way to organize this, just holler!

the stack which must be divided

 

I went a little crazy with the rotary cutter.  For most fabrics I have enough for everyone, for some I'll have to divide and conquer.  Everyone will get at least 25 each.  No need to send me back the number I send you.  I had the fabric so I thought I might as well keep cutting.  If you don't like a few that I send you (or more than a few) neither one of us will feel bad that you don't use them all. :)

P.S.  I'm noticing a lot of birds! 

One more thing:  Melissa- I don't have your address.  Could I have it please?

polaroid swap idea

WHAT IF...instead of sewing blocks for each other we simply swap 2 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch fussy cuts?  Then we can put our fussy cuts in a regular envelope and do all the sewing ourselves at our leisure.  It would be so easy we could send each other a lot more fussy cuts which is what I'm wanting anyway.  Eight of us are signed up- super exciting!  If you have an opinion one way or the other, please share. :)  If you'd like to do it this way please indicate how many you'd like to swap.

So, here in Switzerland they don't celebrate Thanksgiving, and they really don't do Halloween, either.  So finding pumpkin colored fabric meant choosing between the 3 options my fabric store had.  The "light" isn't really light, but I think overall it works.  I hope. :)

It was really fun watching this block come together.  At first, I thought, hmm, this is going to look kind of strange.  But then when I laid out the three rows, I got all excited at how cute it turned out.

Okay I'm going to get this over with- posting blocks for others makes me nervous!  I hope you like it, Becca.  I wish I could get better photos so you could actually see the prints in more detail but you'll get to see them in person.  For example, the first yellow has gray in it but you can't tell from these pics.

I've never organized anything like this before so if you have any suggestions, please share them!  For starters maybe we should tell each other how many we are willing to make for each person in the swap.  I'm not even sure how many to volunteer so I'll let someone else take the lead!

just wondering

I had never heard of polaroid block swaps until this very minute.  The blocks are DARLING!  I had hard time copying and pasting a photo but you can see some examples HERE.  The further you scroll the cuter they get. I have something in mind for my quilt block which I will share in September so I wonder if anyone wants to do a polaroid block swap just for fun.  I figure if I buy some cute fabrics and only need one image it would be a bit of a waste but if I could make several blocks and swap them- perfect!
Let me know if you're interested and how many you'd be interested in swapping.  If you're not interested, don't feel bad.  Never hurts to try. :)

60 Degree Triangle Quilt Tutorial

Here's my little tutorial for June's Triangle Quilt (it's actually going to be a duvet cover).  I'm mailing you all 4 precut triangles and would love it if you could add four more from your own stash.  

Your fabric will need to be 7" wide, with the stretchy grain running horizontally.

Including the triangles I'm sending you, you should have eight pieces.

Line them up in diamond shape pairs, making sure to keep the grain of the fabric going in the same direction.

"Fold" your diamonds in half, right sides together, and sew with a 1/4" seam allowance.  

I pinned mine, so I wouldn't mix up the direction of the grain.

Press the seams open. 

Then, turn the EFGH diamond counterclockwise until H's edge lines up with C's edge, right sides together.

So, E will be on the bottom left and G will be the top right.

Sew C and H together.

Press seams open.

Then repeat for the other four remaining triangles.

That's it!  So easy!

There's a more detailed tutorial on Sew Fresh Quilts, if you need it.  Her tutorial shows how to cut multiple triangles from one strip of fabric, but you only need one triangle from each of your choices.  There are two parts and you can find them HERE.

Catching Up and June's Block

Here's Amy's cute heart block, only two months late.  Seriously, Amy, you did so much prep work, I feel almost guilty about how little you gave us to do!  And here's where I embarrassingly admit to losing one of the pieces she so thoughtfully prepared.  I have no idea what happened to it, but since my sewing room is in my laundry room, I'm guessing it's with all the left socks.  Luckily, it was the bottom left piece, which should be easy to take out, if you're not crazy about my substituted red swirly fabric.

And here's Cindy's Thanksgiving block.  You know when you're laying out fabric and thinking about what patterns and colors will look good together and you think you've come across a good combination and then you get whole thing put together and it's not what you were picturing.  Yeah.  That may have happened here.  I think my brown is too dark and my anchors are too summery.  And I think I had the wrong kind of needle in my machine and it kept bunching up at the thick bits.  Sorry, Cindy.  I really like this pattern, though and was hoping to knock it out of the park.  I totally wouldn't mind doing another one, if you want me to!

My pick for June is going to be a 60 Degree Triangle Quilt.  I am going to send out fabric and a template this week, but I'd love it if you could mix in a few fabric choices of your own.  Color and pattern inspiration are from Bonnie and Camille's April Showers line.  There is a good tutorial on Sew Fresh Quilts.  There are two  parts, so it's pretty thorough.
