I am trying to figure out what square to do (even though my turn isn't until November) and I was curious...
What makes you nervous to quilt?
Does paper piecing give you nightmares?
Do "Y seams" put you in a hot sweat?
Do curves make your vision fuzzy?
Or are you like me and simply struggle with keeping your seams 1/4 inch?
So, let's hear it, what square would terrify you?

um, all of the above? :)
ReplyDeleteseriously, i've only done curves in clothes and applique, our paper piecing last year did stress me a bit and i keep forgetting what a y-seam is! :)
but that being said, bring it! that's what i love is that we're learning so many new things!!
precision makes me nervous, and therefore any kind of piecing. paper piecing isn't my fave, but produces such lovely results, and really aids in the precision thing. i'm dying to try curves. it'll be my next challenge!
ReplyDeleteI'm September and I'm having trouble deciding on what to do too. I would love some good ideas so we don't repeat something we've already done. :) I paper pieced the Nauvoo temple and spent like a gazillion hours on it and can't remember how I did it but I could pick it up again. I have no idea what Y-seams are but I can learn! Curves? I've never done curves but I'm willing to try! Just please, whatever you do don't make me applique using freezer paper. I think that terrifies me. I'd love to see some of your ideas!!
ReplyDeletei am terrified of making a quilt square that the owner will not like or want to use. i generally understand that my style is not the same as the owners, so i try really hard to research out their style. then i head to the fabric store. i am the queen of buying 1/8 of a yard of fabric. does anyone else worry as much as i about the owner liking their square?
ReplyDeleteJen, I worry about it every month! I worry which colors to choose and which patterns will be liked.
DeleteIsn't it funny how we all are so desperate to please and worried that we haven't? Elizabeth and Teriney give me great guidance on what others like and what their taste is like. This month Elizabeth really helped me when I decided to do a second square for Kristin. I worry a lot!
DeleteI actually like any challenge that comes my way design wise, but I have also become BFF with my seam ripper. Some months we have more quality time together than others...it's nice to know I am not perfect ;)
ReplyDeleteI apsolutely agree with Liz and Jen that choosing the right fabric by far is the most challenging, and for me stressful and time consumming! I am glad I know 1/2 of you really well so I feel like I am call or email with additional questions in my quest to catch your vision. You other half, don't worry, I'll find away to call or email you when it's your month whether you want me to or not :)
T, I do the same thing. Call and email to make sure the fabrics are something the owner would like. I have even thought of posting the fabric before quilting, but that would require that owner to be honest about likes and dislikes.
DeleteRobyn emailed me a pic of a fabric to get my opinion an i really appreciated that.
Deletepaper piecing made me nervous before I tried it. Y-seams (like corners where hexagons meet) aren't my favorite, but I don't let them see my trepidation. My biggest concerns are... who is going to start cleaning and cooking around here so I can quilt? And how can I convince my husband that I need to go to quiltcon?
ReplyDeleteI think I can relate to what everyone said. Precision (patience) is my biggest issue. One day I will invest in a special presser foot. I also get really nervous about people liking the fabrics/square I make for them. I have nightmares about it actually. But I am loving the challenge. Kristin, hopefully I will have gathered enough fabrics by next weekend to finish yours!
ReplyDeleteI really love the challenges in this group. Although, I am doing my first paper Piecing in "Trading Pieces" this month. I have put it off and put it off and started today and it is working out! Yay for learning something new! I am worried about the "Y-seams", they sound really hard. But, I say, bring it on. We are here to learn as well as have fun. (I am really just glad to hear that I am not the only one who gets really nervous figuring out what someone else is going to like!)
ReplyDeleteHexagons!
ReplyDeleteI'm super late in this conversation, but I ditto all that has been said. I've never done y seams or the hexagons, but I'm willing to learn. I actually enjoyed the paper piecing, it made things exact and was much easier than I anticipated. We are all fairly new to quilting, so of course we get nervous, but that's part of the learning. Bring it on, come what may, and love it!
