For Kristin

I'm sorry it's late. I hope you like it.

I will refrain from pointing out a layout flaw that now is so glaring to me that I can't look at the square without seeing it. I don't want to put that burden on you. I would have unpicked and redone, but I have found with quilting that where layout is concerned if you "fix" one thing you often mess up another thing. Or two.

It'll be winging its way to you soon!

Oh snap...

One day late! Believe it or not I have been working on this all month! Squares like this are hard for me...I can do random but color schemes make me stress a little. Anyhow here is the fruit of my efforts:
23 unused squares
1 unfinished

I'll finish it before sending, I think it is my favorite!
Finally, 1 square finished!
Ignore the lighting, It's pale pink & mostly navy.
I love these little girls...I hope it works!?

& a little extra photo for you, Kristin!I will send you the extra's too!
Much Love,
T

Granny Squares for K-Dog

I tried to make this square three times.
My first attempt: I really liked how the fabrics looked together, but I could not get things to line up for the life of me.  By the time I finished it, I had picked out the seams too many times and the fabric ended up stretched and warped.  The finish size will not match up with the other squares.
Boo.
My second attempt:  I like the concept of gray and yellow, but not convinced that I pulled it off for this square, however, the 1/4" of white all the way around the edges is very precise!

My third attempt: I'm not loving the way all of these fabrics work together in this square, but my seams and points finally lined up!

So, there you go Kristin.  The best I could do, represented in three squares.  Hope they work!

To Kristin with love (and anxiety),

I hope you enjoy this square.
I had a hard time deciding what colors to do.
Then I had a hard time chosing the fabric.
Then a one year old hastled me the entire time I put this baby together.
Then when I was putting pictures up I realized that the two dots are right next to each other (the one thing my sister suggested I change).
If you hate it blame the one year old.
If you love it thank Jen (for sharing from her stash) and Ace Hardware for having 50% off their fabric :).

Love,
Nicole

P.S. The teal ended up looking lighter in these pictures than is actually is.

Another One for Kristin

Kristin, like many others, I wanted to make another square. (Frankly, I wasn't crazy about the first one.)

I will send them both. You can decide to use them both or the one you like the best. (I found TWO plaids for this one!)

Hope you like it.

I will get mine and Elizabeth's in the mail.

Auf wiedersehen!

Twice the fun...

Have I mentioned that I do not think one square a month is enough?
Every month, I think about how 12 squares are not enough to make a substantial quilt.
When Kristin mentioned this months square was for her bed, I figured it would be a good idea to make 2 squares.
Here is my second square for Kristin...
I think yellow and purple are great contrasting colors.
Kristin, I am sending you two squares (whether you want them or not).
Pick your favorite or use them both... either way, my feelings will not be hurt.
Love from Oklahoma,

Jen

PS In the next months, if anyone wants an extra square or two, I am your girl.

Notches

Totally love this square!!! I think the notches are inevitable. My thoughts on why. We were asked to cut 1/4 inch from the center of the diamond. That's where the notches start. So if we cut right thought the center I don't think it would happen. Just my 2 cents. Kristin has some killer skills and can work them into the seam.

x marks the spot

my daughter thinks the middle looks like an x. hopefully i'm near the mark!
what a delightful square! I am definitely making one of these again!
hopefully it's not too much pink.
or too many cherries. :) but hey, at least you'll know it's mine, right? :)

sending much love to Germany!

My Granny Square for Kristin, from a real Granny...

Kristin, what a fun square! (I think I will make another one. Or more!)

I am really confused as to why some of the finished squares have the notches in the white and mine doesn't! Is it a matter of ironing? Anyway, you told Jen hers was ok with notches, so I hope mine is too.

for kristin

kristin-
i just loved the square you chose.  what a genius idea for a quilting bee- 13 different fabrics incorporated into each square.  i had great difficulty choosing a color scheme so i made two for you (you don't have to use both, of course).  i would love to see the other four blocks you made for ideas!  if anyone would like to share quilt ideas from your pinterest accounts i am interested in seeing them.  not sure how i will ever come up with an idea for my quilt come september.  thinking this would be a great one if i can't find another idea!  i hope you like these.  -camie
p.s. went to joanns yesterday and they were not familiar with denyse schmidt.  sorry!

a granny square for K

I went with blue & green because that's what I have the most of in my stash (and it's what I'm always drawn to).  I hope you like it, Kristin! what a fun block!

FYI: The blue is more aqua than this photo portrays.

If you live in or around Little Rock, Joann's is having a big liquidation sale before they move to their new location on McCain.  I'll try to leave some fabric for you, but I can't promise anything.

To Kristin Love, Jen

Dear Kristin,
To avoid packing for my trip, I decided to start quilting a 12:30 am.
Avoidance is a re-accuring event for me.
(Does anyone love packing?)
I decided to go with green and orange.
Everything was going smoothly, until the last step.
When I went to cut the points of to square up the quilt... I was left with 1/4 inch triangles along all the edges.
This picture makes it look worse that it really is, but you can see what I am talking about.
Part of me thinks it can be sewn into the seam allowance...
the other part of me wants to start over.
Problem is, I do not know where I want wrong.
Please give me further instructions.
Were my seam allowances slightly too generous? Did I cut it wrong?
I REALLY do not mind starting over.
Just let me know.

Love you,
Jen

PS I am leaving for Mexico in a few hours. If I am murdered or kidnapped by the Mexican Cartel, I hereby bestow my fabric collection to Nicole.  Additionally, I would also expect to be buried in a 12squared quilt. ;)

March of the Granny Squares

would you all like to know how many blocks i made before i settled on this one??

4!

FOUR!

i'm not sure if it's the move, or my toddler, or the whiplash from all of these new German dents in my car-- but i feel like i'm really off my sewing game.

however, this morning,
that's right,
this morning,
i found clarity.

i whipped ye little block up in about an hour, and loved it!

i found it on pinterest about a month ago, and linked it to the source, blue elephant.

here is her tutorial. she does a good job. you should probably follow hers.

here's mine. remember,
toddler,
international move,
whiplash.

bear with me...

all of the squares for this pattern are going to be 3.5 inches.

you'll need 12 white squares (using the kona white I'll send), 8 of the same color tone for the outer ring, and 5 of the same color tone for the inner ring.

for my block i chose red and blue.
once you get all of the squares cut (25 total), take a few minutes and arrange them.
have fun with the size of the prints, values, etc.
once you have your squares arranged, start assembling.
for me, the easiest way to do this visually, was to turn my mat on an angle and attach the squares by rows.
your lonely white squares at the top and bottom will be attached last.
once you have all of your squares stitched into rows, start attaching your rows. right sides together. make sure to keep your middle squares centered.
once all of your rows are attached it should look like this.
almost done.
next, trim the edges.
you'll want to trim 1/4 inch outside of the points.
and voila! a granny square block!

i love the combination of traditional and modern. i love the uses of color against each other and then framed with the white. i love how simple this pattern is to make, but how intricate it looks.

a few specifics:
* along with the white, please use contrasting colors tones for the "outer ring" and the "inner ring"

* my fabric preferences: i love geometric prints, modern, abstract, linear, polka dots, simple, or vintage prints.

* my favorite designers are denyse schmidt (especially her latest from Joanns that i can't get any of, hint hint, i mean, if you happen to have it on hand of course), lizzy house, laurie wisbrun, and anna maria horner (i certainly don't expect anyone to go purchase fabric, i just wanted to give you an idea of my style)

* dislikes: traditional florals, novelty, neon, the "watercolor" effect

* please use a 1/4 inch seam allowance, white thread, and press the seams open...i know, i know:)

* i'm shipping out the kona white tomorrow, so it should get to you next week. i'm sorry about the delay---no amazing excuses here. feel free to go ahead if you happen to have a kona white stash, to get started (you'll need about 1/8 of a yard)

* this quilt is for my bed...just something to keep in mind. (probably why I was so non-committal)

please email me if you have any questions or if i need to clarify anything. anything at all.
here is a shot what my brain feels like...now you know.
i totally blame the wonder baby, for everything.

hugs to you all, and i can't wait to wrap myself up in all of your handiwork!
